Sarkhej lies on the southwestern edge of Ahmedabad in Gujarat, where the older fabric of the city meets fast-growing new districts. From above, it combines a dense historic village core, large residential blocks and major roads, with the Sarkhej–Gandhinagar Highway running north from here as one of the city's main commercial corridors.
The best-known landmark is the Sarkhej Roza, a fifteenth-century complex of mosque, tombs and palace buildings arranged around a large stepped tank. On the map the tank appears as a clean rectangle of water surrounded by courtyards, a distinct and orderly shape in the middle of a much busier landscape.
