Steelworks footprint
East of the centre, the works fill a large area of long sheds, rail sidings and yards. This block of industrial geometry takes up much of the eastern half of any map of Scunthorpe.

Scunthorpe Map Poster & Print
From above, Scunthorpe looks like a town that grew in a hurry. Terraced streets and interwar estates spread along higher ground above the Trent valley. To the east, the steelworks cover a huge area of sheds, sidings and storage yards, a pattern almost as large as the housing itself. That contrast between the fine grain of homes and the sheer scale of industry is what makes the map so recognisable.
The town took shape in the nineteenth century after ironstone was found under the local farmland. The villages of Scunthorpe, Frodingham, Brumby, Crosby and Ashby slowly grew into one another. On the map you can still pick out their old centres as small knots in the street pattern, linked by long roads that once crossed open fields. The football club, Scunthorpe United, is still known as the Iron.
A Scunthorpe map poster turns all of this into black lines on white. It shows the rail lines curving in to feed the works, the motorway spur arriving from the south, and the parks and playing fields that break up the housing. At the western edge, open land slopes down towards the river. It is a portrait of a working town, drawn without decoration.

Five merged villages
Frodingham, Brumby, Crosby, Ashby and Scunthorpe itself began as separate settlements. Their old cores still show as small clusters where the street grid changes direction.
Edge of the Trent valley
The town sits on higher ground. To the west the land drops towards the River Trent, leaving a band of open fields between the last streets and the water.

Zakaj Scunthorpe
Zemljevid, ki nekaj pomeni
For people who grew up in Scunthorpe, or whose families worked in steel, this map puts home and work in one frame. It suits a hallway or a study. The dense terraces and broad industrial blocks hold up well at larger sizes such as 50×70 cm or 24×36″.
You can change the title and add a subtitle, such as a family name or the years someone spent at the works. The coordinates line can be edited too. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then download the $9 HD files or order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
