Shangsi is a county town in Fangchenggang, in the southern part of Guangxi, lying inland from the Gulf of Tonkin at the foot of the Shiwandashan, the range whose name means the Hundred Thousand Mountains. The town fits into a valley, with its streets organised along the river and extending into the lower surrounding land.
A Shangsi map poster shows a compact urban area surrounded by hills and farmland. The central streets form a relatively dense network near the river, while newer roads and development extend outward, stopping where the ground begins to rise towards the forested slopes.
