Grid and diagonals
The lettered and numbered streets form a regular grid, while L'Enfant's avenues slice across it at angles. The result is a distinctive web of intersections and wedge-shaped blocks.

Shaw Map Poster & Print
Shaw is a neighbourhood in Washington, D.C., just north of downtown. It is named after Robert Gould Shaw, the Union colonel who led the 54th Massachusetts Regiment. For much of the twentieth century it was a centre of Black cultural life in the city. Along U Street and around the historic Howard Theatre, music venues and businesses once earned the area its reputation.
On a map, Shaw shows Washington's layout very clearly. Numbered streets run north–south, lettered streets run east–west, and broad diagonal avenues from the original L'Enfant plan cut across both. Where the diagonals meet the grid, they leave small triangular parks and oddly shaped blocks. The rows of townhouses fill in a dense, fine-grained pattern.
A Shaw map poster captures that meeting of grid and diagonal in just a few blocks. The long lines of the avenues give the print a strong direction, and the tight residential streets between them keep it detailed and textured from edge to edge.

U Street corridor
The area around U Street was long associated with jazz clubs, theatres and Black-owned businesses. It remains one of the best-known streets in the neighbourhood.
Triangle parks
Where diagonal avenues cross the grid, small triangular and circular green spaces appear. On the map they are crisp geometric shapes among the rowhouse blocks.

Zakaj Shaw
Zemljevid, ki nekaj pomeni
Shaw is a place people settle in, meet friends in and remember from their first years in Washington. A map of its streets works as a personal souvenir and as a fine piece of urban geometry, with the diagonals doing most of the visual work.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with an address or the year you moved in. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the planned layout especially well.
