Shenyang spreads across the flat Liaohe plain, with the Hun River running through its southern districts in a broad channel lined with parks and crossed by a series of long bridges. North of the river the city is laid out in a largely regular pattern of wide avenues and large blocks, with ring roads drawing concentric loops around the centre.
At the heart of the old city stands the Mukden Palace, built in the early seventeenth century by the first rulers of the Qing dynasty before they took Beijing. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as are the Qing tombs of Zhaoling in Beiling Park to the north and Fuling to the east. To the west, Tiexi district was one of China's great heavy-industry areas in the twentieth century, and its long straight streets and rail sidings still reflect that period, even where factories have given way to housing and parks. Shenyang was historically called Mukden, and the 1931 Mukden Incident, which preceded the Japanese occupation of Manchuria, took place near the city.

Hun River
The river runs across the southern part of the city with broad parkland on both banks. It separates the older centre from the newer Hunnan districts and gives the map a strong horizontal line.
Beiling Park
A large park north of the centre containing Zhaoling, the tomb of Emperor Hong Taiji. A long straight avenue leads toward it, and its lake and woodland form a clear open rectangle.
