River confluence
The Missouri meets the Mississippi just to the north-east, and their broad channels and sandbars give the map two strong curving lines.

Spanish Lake Map Poster & Print
Spanish Lake is an unincorporated community at the northern edge of St. Louis County, Missouri, near where the Missouri River flows into the Mississippi. On the map its suburban streets, with their curves and cul-de-sacs, stop suddenly at a large area of bottomland. There, river channels, sloughs and farm fields replace the housing grid.
The community takes its name from a lake from the late eighteenth century, when the region was under Spanish rule. The land next to it is mostly public ground: Fort Belle Fontaine Park, on the site of an early US military post above the Missouri, and the Columbia Bottom Conservation Area at the confluence itself. Both appear on the map as wide open space bordered by water.
A Spanish Lake map poster works because of this contrast. The upper part is dense with residential loops and arterial roads, and the lower part opens out into the curves of two major rivers. It is a clear picture of how the St. Louis suburbs reach the edge of the floodplain.

Suburban street pattern
Curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs fill the upland, bordered by straighter arterial roads that link the community to the rest of the county.
