Tarbagatai range
The mountains north of the city give Tacheng its name and frame the basin. On a wider map they form a dark band of contours above the fields.

Tacheng Map Poster & Print
Tacheng lies in the far north-west of Xinjiang, in a basin with the Tarbagatai range to the north and lower mountains to the south. The border with Kazakhstan is close to the west, and the Bakhty crossing links the two countries. On a map the city is compact, with a regular grid of streets surrounded by irrigated farmland and the straight lines of field boundaries and canals.
The city has long been a trading post on routes between Xinjiang and Central Asia. It is known for the variety of its population, which includes Kazakh, Uyghur, Hui, Han, Russian, Tatar and Daur communities. Its Chinese name is short for Tarbagatai city, after the mountains to the north, which form a clear, dark band along the top of any wider map.
Small rivers flow down from the mountains across the basin, feeding the farms and the lines of trees that shelter the fields from wind. A Tacheng map poster shows a town that feels both remote and connected: a tight grid at the centre, long roads leading toward the border, and a wide open landscape of fields and mountains around it.

Farmland grid
Irrigated fields, canals and rows of trees spread across the basin in straight lines. Together they create a regular pattern that matches the city's own grid.
Border road
Roads run west from the city toward the Bakhty crossing into Kazakhstan. They are a reminder of Tacheng's long role as a trading town on the frontier.
