Tayga is a town in Kemerovo Oblast in western Siberia, and its map starts with the railway. The Trans-Siberian line runs through the town, and here a branch splits off toward Tomsk. The tracks, yards and station form a broad band through the middle, and the streets are arranged around them.
On either side of the railway, the town is laid out in a fairly regular pattern of residential streets, with low houses and small apartment blocks. Beyond the outskirts the land is largely forested, and the town's name, which means boreal forest, describes exactly what surrounds it on the map.
A Tayga map poster shows a place defined by movement: a junction town whose shape comes from the tracks that pass through it. The settlement grew up at the end of the nineteenth century when the Trans-Siberian Railway was built, and the railway has been its reason for existing ever since.
