Vrindāvan lies in Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, on the banks of the Yamuna, and is one of the most sacred places in Hinduism, associated with the childhood of Krishna. From above, the old town is an extraordinarily dense mesh of narrow lanes, courtyards and temple compounds, pressed against the curve of the river and lined with bathing ghats along the water.
Thousands of temples are found here, from historic shrines such as Banke Bihari and Govind Dev to large modern complexes like the ISKCON temple and Prem Mandir on the edges of town. Pilgrims walk a parikrama route around the town, a loop that traces the outline of the old settlement and meets the river along the ghats.
