Walsrode is in the Heidekreis district of Lower Saxony, on the edge of the Lüneburg Heath. The small river Böhme winds through the town, and the oldest streets sit close to its banks. From above, the centre is a tight knot of lanes around the church and the abbey. Further out it loosens into residential streets, allotments and patches of pine and heath.
Kloster Walsrode, a convent founded in the late tenth century, is one of the oldest religious foundations in the region, and it still anchors the historic core. The crossroads is easy to see just outside town, where the A7 and A27 motorways meet at the Walsrode triangle and their ramps draw wide loops through the forest.
