Westminster is the county seat of Carroll County, Maryland, northwest of Baltimore in rolling Piedmont country. The town grew along a single long Main Street. That line still shapes the map, with older blocks close to it on either side. Railroad tracks once linked Westminster to Baltimore and the wider region, and traces of the rail corridor remain in the street plan.
On a hill on the west side of town lies the campus of McDaniel College. It was known until 2002 as Western Maryland College, and its buildings and green spaces make a distinct area in the drawing. Beyond the centre, twentieth-century neighbourhoods and road bypasses spread out. Farmland and small woods surround the town in every direction.
