Yamethin lies in the south of Mandalay Region, in the dry zone of central Myanmar. On a map the town is a compact network of streets on flat ground. The railway between Yangon and Mandalay passes through, and main roads run alongside it. Beyond the built-up area, fields and scattered villages spread across the plain, and to the east the land begins to rise toward the hills.
The town has long been a local administrative and trading centre on this north–south route, and its position on the rail line has shaped its growth. Monasteries and pagodas appear among the neighbourhoods, and markets gather near the main roads. The surrounding farmland reflects the region's dry climate, with small reservoirs and streams feeding the fields.
