Yangquan lies in eastern Shanxi, among the ridges of the Taihang Mountains close to the border with Hebei. Few cities in the region are so shaped by terrain: the urban area winds through narrow valleys, with neighbourhoods climbing hillsides and main roads following the valley floors. On a map it looks like a branching stream of streets rather than a compact block.
Coal has defined Yangquan's economy since the early twentieth century, and the area is known for its anthracite. The city also sits on one of the historic routes between the North China Plain and the Shanxi plateau. Nearby, in Pingding County, Niangziguan is a famous Great Wall pass, named by tradition after a Tang dynasty princess whose troops guarded it.
