Yueyang sits on the eastern shore of Dongting Lake in northern Hunan, where the lake empties into the Yangtze River. On the map, the city is a long band of streets along the waterfront, with the vast lake spreading to the west and the Yangtze curving past to the north. The lake's outline changes with the seasons, which makes the shoreline especially distinctive.
The city's best-known landmark is the Yueyang Tower, one of the Three Great Towers of Jiangnan, which overlooks the lake from the old city wall. It was made famous by an eleventh-century essay by Fan Zhongyan, still widely taught in China.
