Zarqa grew up along the river that gave it its name, one of the few permanent streams in this part of Jordan. On the map the river valley bends through the urban area, and the city's blocks press outward from it onto the surrounding plateau in a compact, closely packed pattern with few large open spaces.
Once a small settlement on the Hejaz Railway, Zarqa expanded rapidly through the twentieth century as industry, military bases and large numbers of new residents arrived. It is now one of the most populous cities in the country and part of a continuous urban belt that reaches through Russeifa toward Amman in the southwest.
