Zhanhe Map Poster & Print
Zhanhe is a small township in northwest Yunnan, in the Lijiang region, where high ridges and deep valleys shape everything built on them. From above, the settlement is held in a valley, and its streets stretch along the level ground rather than spreading in every direction. Roads leading out of town wind through the surrounding mountains in long curves and switchbacks.
This is country where the terrain does the planning. Farmland takes up whatever flat or terraced land is available, and villages sit where valleys widen. On a black and white map that produces a strong contrast between a compact cluster of streets and the long, sinuous lines of mountain roads heading away from it.
A Zhanhe map poster shows that relationship clearly: a small, dense centre and threads of road bending across empty space. It is a map for someone with roots in the township, or for travellers who remember the drive through these mountains more clearly than any city.

Winding mountain roads
Roads leaving Zhanhe twist and double back through the hills, drawing long curving lines that give the poster much of its movement.
Terraced surroundings
Farmland and small villages sit wherever the ground allows, so the space around town is broken by scattered, irregular patches of settlement.
