Ahar lies in the uplands of East Azerbaijan, northeast of Tabriz. The town follows the valley of the Ahar River, with its main roads roughly parallel to the water and a looser network of lanes climbing the slopes on either side. On a map the built-up area is compact and ends quickly where it meets open farmland and hills.
It is the main town of the historic Qaradagh region, which reaches north toward the Aras River and the Arasbaran forests. Ahar is also known for the shrine of Sheikh Shahab al-Din Ahari, a medieval Sufi figure. In August 2012 a pair of strong earthquakes struck the area between Ahar and Varzaqan.
