Al Maḩmūdīyah is a town in Beheira Governorate, in the western Nile Delta of Egypt. It sits on the Rosetta branch of the Nile, and on the map the broad river and the canals leading from it are the defining features, framing the dense streets of the town.
The town is closely linked with the Mahmoudiyah Canal, built in the early nineteenth century under Muhammad Ali to carry Nile water and river traffic to Alexandria. The canal begins near the town, and the flat, intensively farmed delta land around it is laced with irrigation channels.
