Atarfe lies a short distance northwest of Granada, on the broad agricultural plain known as the Vega. Its map has two distinct sides: flat land with fields and irrigation channels stretching away to the south and west, and to the north the rise of Sierra Elvira, a compact, rocky range. Between them, a dense older core gives way to newer residential streets.
The slopes of Sierra Elvira hold the remains of Madinat Ilbira, a city that served as a major centre of the region in the early Islamic period, before Granada rose to prominence. Today Atarfe is closely tied to the Granada metropolitan area, with modern roads and the airport not far away. In black and white, plain, hills and town form an unusually varied composition.
