Augsburg was founded by the Romans in 15 BC, making it one of the oldest cities in Germany. It lies on a tongue of higher ground between two rivers, the Lech to the east and the Wertach to the west, which meet just north of the centre. The old town runs along this ridge in a long north-south line, with Maximilianstraße as its broad spine.
Water is present all over the map. A network of canals, many of them medieval, branches off the Lech and runs through the lower town, once powering mills and supplying the city's fountains. This water management system was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2019. The canals appear as fine, winding lines between the blocks of the Lechviertel and the old craft quarters.
Augsburg was home to the Fugger banking family, whose Fuggerei, founded in 1516, is the oldest social housing complex still in use; its walled rectangle of small houses is clear even at map scale.
