Aurich stands in the middle of East Frisia in Lower Saxony, far enough inland to be surrounded by level farmland, moor and scattered woods rather than dykes and tidal flats. From above, the historic centre is a compact oval of streets around the market place. Roads radiate out across the countryside to villages and to the coastal towns of the region.
For centuries Aurich was the seat of the East Frisian counts and later princes, and the castle and its grounds still sit close to the centre. The Ems-Jade Canal passes the town, a nineteenth-century waterway linking Emden and Wilhelmshaven. Just outside Aurich lies the Upstalsboom, the hill where representatives of the Frisian lands met in the Middle Ages.
