Barentsøya lies in eastern Svalbard, between Spitsbergen to the west and Edgeøya to the south, and is named after the Dutch navigator Willem Barentsz. It is roughly rounded in outline, with an interior covered largely by ice caps, from which glaciers flow toward the coast. Between the ice and the sea, bare slopes and gravel plains form a narrow margin of open land.
To the south, the narrow strait of Freemansundet separates Barentsøya from Edgeøya and is known for its strong tidal currents, while other slender sounds divide it from Spitsbergen to the west. There are no settlements or roads, only a few scattered huts, so the map is shaped entirely by coastline, ice and the surrounding channels.
The island lies within the Southeast Svalbard Nature Reserve, one of the strictly protected areas of the archipelago, and polar bears are regularly seen along its shores.
