Wilczek Land is one of the largest islands in Franz Josef Land, in the eastern part of the archipelago. Almost all of it is covered by a thick ice cap, and its coast is often formed by glacier fronts that meet the sea. The outline is broad and uneven. There are no towns and no roads, only the edge between ice and water.
The island is named after Count Johann Nepomuk Wilczek, the patron of the Austro-Hungarian North Pole expedition. Led by Julius Payer and Karl Weyprecht, that expedition discovered Franz Josef Land in 1873 while its ship was trapped in the ice.
