Bari Map Poster
Bari faces the Adriatic on the coast of Apulia, and its map shows two very different cities side by side. On a small promontory, Bari Vecchia is a maze of narrow alleys, tiny courtyards and dead ends, surrounded by sea walls. Directly south of it, the Murat district spreads out in a strict chessboard of straight streets, begun in 1813 under Joachim Murat.
The difference is easy to see from above. The old town looks like a knot, and the new town looks like graph paper. A Bari map poster puts both together, with the Norman-Swabian castle at the point where they meet. The Lungomare seafront curves away to the south and east along the water.
In the old town stands the Basilica of San Nicola, which holds relics of Saint Nicholas brought from Myra in 1087. It makes Bari a place of pilgrimage for both Catholic and Orthodox visitors. The port on the northern side receives ferries from across the Adriatic.
