Batman lies in south-eastern Anatolia, on a plain east of the Batman River, a tributary of the Tigris. On a map the city is strikingly regular: straight avenues and rectangular blocks laid out mostly in the twentieth century, with newer districts extending outward. The river valley runs along the western side, and open farmland surrounds the urban area.
The city grew rapidly after oil was discovered at nearby Raman Mountain in the 1940s, Turkey's first commercial oil field, and a refinery was built here soon after. It became a province in 1990. The ancient town of Hasankeyf on the Tigris lies within the province, to the south-east.
