Bergisch Gladbach lies just east of Cologne, where the flat Rhine lowland rises into the hills of the Bergisches Land. The map reflects that transition. Streets in the west are fairly regular, and further east they curve along valleys and ridges, with large forests between the districts.
The Strunde stream runs through the centre. For centuries it powered mills, and the city became known for papermaking, a tradition carried on by the Zanders mill for generations. The city is a union of formerly separate towns, including Bensberg and Refrath. Each still has its own centre on the map.
