Bergneustadt is a small town in the Oberbergischer Kreis, in the hilly Bergisches Land east of Cologne. It was founded in the early fourteenth century as a fortified settlement by the Counts of the Mark. The historic centre on its ridge still preserves the outline of that early town, with slate-clad houses typical of the region.
