Béthune Map Poster
Béthune is a town in the Pas-de-Calais, in the Hauts-de-France region, on the edge of the former coalfield of northern France. Its centre is the Grand-Place and its medieval belfry, part of the group of belfries of Belgium and France inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
The map shows a clear concentric plan. The Grand-Place sits in the middle of a compact old town of short, closely set streets, surrounded by a ring of boulevards that follow the line of the former fortifications. Beyond that ring, streets radiate out to suburbs and former mining communities. A canal runs past the town, adding a long, straight line of water.
Béthune was heavily damaged in 1918 and largely rebuilt after the First World War, which is why its gabled façades have an Art Deco and regional look. A Béthune map poster shows the old town's layout, which survived that rebuilding.
