Bhamo lies on the east bank of the Irrawaddy River in Kachin State, northern Myanmar, not far from the border with China. The river dominates the map. Its wide channel, sandbanks and islands lie along one side of the town, and the streets run parallel to the bank before spreading inland. Water and land share the frame almost equally.
For centuries Bhamo was a trading post on routes between Burma and Yunnan. In the colonial era, it was known as the upper limit of regular steamer navigation on the Irrawaddy for much of the year. That role as a meeting point between river traffic and overland caravans shaped the long, riverfront form of the town.
