Chichén Itzá lies in the interior of the Yucatán Peninsula, on flat limestone land covered by dry forest. From above, the archaeological site appears as a series of large clearings connected by straight paths, surrounded by dense vegetation. The main highway passes nearby, and small nearby communities form compact grids beside it.
Chichén Itzá was one of the largest Maya cities, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its best-known structure is El Castillo, the stepped pyramid dedicated to Kukulcán, where shadows on the stairway at the equinoxes suggest a descending serpent. The Sacred Cenote, a natural sinkhole, is connected to the main plaza by an ancient raised causeway, or sacbe.
