Chone lies inland in the Ecuadorian province of Manabí, on the Chone River, which flows west toward the estuary at Bahía de Caráquez. On the map, the river winds past the town. A fairly regular grid of streets sits on the flat valley floor, and low hills rise around the edges. There, the pattern loosens into scattered roads and farmland.
The Chone valley is agricultural country, with cattle ranching and crops on the humid lowlands of coastal Ecuador. The town serves as a market centre for the surrounding area.
