Darwin, the capital of Australia's Northern Territory, sits on a peninsula between Port Darwin and the Timor Sea. On a map, water surrounds it on nearly every side. The compact city centre sits at the southern tip above the harbour. Suburbs spread north along a coastline of beaches, headlands and mangrove creeks, while the Stuart Highway leaves for the long drive south.
The city has been rebuilt more than once. It was bombed by Japanese aircraft in 1942 and largely destroyed by Cyclone Tracy on Christmas Day 1974. Much of its present street pattern dates from the reconstruction that followed. Today Darwin is known for its dry-season markets at Mindil Beach, for its position close to Asia and for sunsets over open water.

West of the centre, the coast curves into a wide bay and ends at a wooded headland. It gives the map a graceful, sweeping shoreline.
