Eberbach sits on the Neckar River in northern Baden-Württemberg, where the valley winds through the wooded hills of the Odenwald. The map is dominated by the river. The Neckar makes a broad curve past the town, and the built-up area occupies the narrow strip of flat land on its northern bank before thick forest climbs the slopes behind it.
The old town is compact and still clearly outlined. Its medieval walls have mostly gone, but several defensive towers survive and mark the old boundary. Inside, the streets form a tight, irregular network typical of a small German river town. A bridge crosses the Neckar, and the railway and main road follow the valley alongside the water.
