Edfu lies on the west bank of the Nile in Aswan governorate, roughly midway between Luxor and Aswan. From above, the Nile valley is shown at its simplest: the river, a narrow band of irrigated farmland on each side, and then desert. The town is a dense cluster of streets on the western bank, with canals and field boundaries around it.
Edfu is known for the Temple of Horus, built in the Ptolemaic period and widely regarded as the best-preserved temple in Egypt. Its long, rectangular enclosure sits among the streets of the modern town and stands out clearly on the map. Nile cruise boats between Luxor and Aswan regularly stop here, and a bridge links the town to the east bank.
