Erzincan sits on a broad, flat plain in eastern Turkey, enclosed by high mountains to the north and south. The upper course of the Euphrates, known locally as the Karasu, crosses the plain to the south of the city. From above, the urban area forms a tidy block of streets on level ground, surrounded by fields and orchards that stretch towards the foot of the slopes.
The city's regular layout has a clear origin. In December 1939 a devastating earthquake destroyed the old town, and Erzincan was rebuilt a short distance to the north on a planned grid of straight streets and wide avenues. Seen on a map, this orderly pattern is unusual for a city of such long history, and it contrasts sharply with the rugged terrain surrounding the plain.
Erzincan lies along the North Anatolian Fault, and the region's story has been shaped by that geology. The city is also known for its tulum cheese, and the wider province includes the canyon country around Kemaliye.
