Farshūţ lies in Qena Governorate in Upper Egypt, where the Nile makes its great bend and the cultivated valley forms a green band between two deserts. From above the town is a compact mass of closely built streets, surrounded on most sides by a patchwork of fields divided by irrigation channels. Beyond them the valley ends where the desert begins, a line that is unmistakable on any map.
Like many Nile valley towns, Farshūţ grew densely rather than outward, because the irrigated land around it is too valuable to build on. Its lanes are narrow and irregular, and they tighten toward the older core. Roads and canals leading away from the town tend to run straight along field boundaries. The settlement therefore appears as a knot of fine detail inside a more regular agricultural frame.
