Fernandópolis is a city in the far northwest of São Paulo state, a region of rolling farmland between the Paraná and Grande rivers. Like many towns founded during the westward expansion of the twentieth century, it was laid out with a plan. On the map, its streets form an even grid of square blocks, with the central square and main church near the middle.
Around the city, the land is used for agriculture and livestock, and the fields and pastures extend to the horizon in soft, irregular shapes. Highways connect Fernandópolis to the other cities in the region, and the town serves as a local centre for commerce, services and education in the surrounding municipalities.
