Forbach sits in the Moselle department in northeastern France, right on the German border, a few kilometres from Saarbrücken. From above, the town spreads along a valley at the foot of wooded hills, and its streets wind up the slopes. The border runs close to the town's edge, and the built-up area continues almost without a break into Germany.
Rising above the centre is the Schlossberg, a wooded hill with the remains of a medieval castle and its tower. On the map it is an open, rounded space beside the dense streets.
