Halifax lies in West Yorkshire, on the eastern slopes of the Pennines, where Hebble Brook runs down to the River Calder. The town centre sits low in the valley, and from above its streets climb steeply in every direction, rows of terraced houses stepping up the hillsides toward the moorland edges.
Halifax grew rich from wool and textiles. The Piece Hall, opened in 1779 as a cloth hall where merchants sold woven lengths of cloth, is a vast open square enclosed by colonnaded galleries, and it now reads on the map as a clear rectangle in the centre. Nearby, the Dean Clough mills, once among the largest carpet factories in the world, stretch along the valley floor.
A Halifax map poster shows a town formed by industry and gradient. Main roads follow the valleys, railway viaducts and cuttings thread through, and terraces fill the slopes in parallel lines. Wainhouse Tower rises on the western hillside, and the surrounding moors leave the edges of the map open and wide.
