Holzkirchen lies in the Bavarian Oberland, about thirty kilometres south of Munich, on a plateau of meadows and woods before the Alps begin. The market town is a transport junction: railway lines from Munich divide here toward the Tegernsee, Schliersee and Bad Tölz, and the A8 motorway to Salzburg passes nearby. These lines cross the map as strong, deliberate strokes.
The centre of Holzkirchen gathers around the market square and the parish church, with streets radiating outward toward the surrounding villages. Newer residential areas and business parks have grown along the main roads, and fields and patches of forest remain between them.
