Long main street
The Hoofdstraat runs through the town as one long axis, the original line of settlement in the peat colony. It remains the backbone of the map.

Mapa
Hoogeveen Map Poster & Print
Hoogeveen lies in the south of Drenthe, in the flat, open country of the north-eastern Netherlands. Its plan still reflects how it began. The town grew along a long central axis, the Hoofdstraat, with the land on both sides once divided into narrow strips for peat cutting. Around that ribbon, later neighbourhoods fill the space in organised, planned blocks.
Hoogeveen was founded in the seventeenth century as a peat settlement. Canals were dug to drain the bogs and carry the peat away by boat, and the Hoogeveense Vaart is still one of its main waterways. When the peat ran out, the land became farmland and the settlement grew into a town.
A Hoogeveen map poster shows these layers: the long main street, the canals, the straight roads and field lines of reclaimed land and the planned residential districts around them. The pattern is geometric and orderly, typical of Dutch reclaimed landscapes.

Peat canals
Canals such as the Hoogeveense Vaart cross the area in straight lines. They were dug to drain the bogs and transport peat, and they still structure the landscape.
Reclaimed land
Around the town, straight roads and field boundaries divide the flat land into long strips and rectangles. It is the typical pattern of Dutch former peat lands.
