Itoman Map Poster
Itoman occupies the southern end of Okinawa Island. Its western side faces the East China Sea, where the old town and fishing port sit beside newer land reclaimed along the coast. Inland, the land rises into low limestone ridges covered with sugarcane fields and small villages, crossed by winding roads.
The town has a strong maritime tradition. Its fishermen were known across the Ryukyu Islands and beyond, famous for their sabani boats and for diving. The southern coast at Mabuni, where the Battle of Okinawa ended in 1945, is now the Okinawa Peace Memorial Park, visited by people from across Japan.
