Kadavu is the fourth-largest island of Fiji, lying south of Viti Levu across the Kadavu Passage. On a map it is long and irregular, running roughly east to west, with bays cutting so deeply into its coastline that in places the island narrows to thin isthmuses. The interior is mountainous and forested, and the shoreline winds through countless small coves.
There are few roads, and much travel between villages still happens by boat or on foot, so the map is shaped by water rather than streets. Vunisea, near the airstrip, is the main administrative centre, set on one of the narrow necks of land. Other villages are scattered around the coast, each facing its own bay.
Along the northeast lies the Great Astrolabe Reef, one of the largest barrier reefs in the region and a well-known diving area. The island is also known for its birdlife, including species found nowhere else.
