Suva occupies a peninsula on the southeast coast of Viti Levu, Fiji's largest island. On one side lies Suva Harbour with its wharves and sheltered anchorage. On the other is the broad, shallow curve of Laucala Bay. A reef runs offshore, so on a detailed map the city seems to sit inside a protective line drawn in the sea.
The colonial centre is concentrated at the southern end of the peninsula, where Victoria Parade runs along the waterfront past the Government Buildings and the open lawns of Albert Park and Thurston Gardens. Northward the grid dissolves into suburbs that follow ridges and valleys, with main roads curving to avoid the steeper ground and creeks winding down toward the harbour.
Suva replaced Levuka as the colonial capital in 1882. Today it is one of the largest cities among the Pacific islands and home to the main campus of the University of the South Pacific beside Laucala Bay.
