Kuala Kangsar stands where the Kangsar River joins the Perak River, and the wide, curving river dominates the map. The town sits on its bank. The older centre is compact, while palace grounds, mosque grounds and school campuses occupy large, open parcels along the water. Wooded hills and plantations surround the town and frame it on the page.
This is the royal town of Perak, home of the Sultan's official palace, the Istana Iskandariah. Nearby is the Ubudiah Mosque, known for its golden onion domes. Across town is the Malay College Kuala Kangsar, founded in 1905, whose large grounds leave a wide open shape on the map. These grand parcels give Kuala Kangsar a spacious layout that is unusual for a town of its size.
Kuala Kangsar also has a place in the history of agriculture in Malaya. Some of the first rubber trees in the country were planted here in the late nineteenth century, and one is still preserved in town.
