Kütahya lies in western Anatolia at the foot of a hill crowned by its castle. The map shows the transition clearly. Winding, irregular streets climb toward the fortress, while the newer city extends outward across flatter ground in straighter, more regular blocks. Main roads leave in several directions, linking Kütahya with Eskişehir, Afyonkarahisar and the Aegean.
The city is best known for its tile and ceramic tradition. For centuries Kütahya's workshops produced glazed pottery and çini decorated with blue and polychrome designs, and the craft continues today. The castle above town, with its round towers and walls, is the landmark visible from most of the city.
