Kulmbach lies in Upper Franconia, in northern Bavaria, where the White Main flows through a valley shortly before joining the Red Main to form the river Main. The old town sits on the valley floor, a compact cluster of streets and squares, while wooded slopes rise around it and give the map a strong sense of enclosure.
Above the town stands the Plassenburg, a large Renaissance fortress that houses museums, including the German Tin Figure Museum.
