Würzburg sits in a wide bend of the River Main, and the map makes its structure easy to read. The old town lies on the east bank. It is surrounded by the Ringpark, a green belt that follows the line of the former fortifications, while the Marienberg Fortress stands on the hill across the river.
The Old Main Bridge, lined with statues of saints, links the two sides and is one of the city's best known sights. East of the centre is the Würzburg Residence, a vast Baroque palace with formal gardens. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and forms a large, symmetrical block on a Würzburg map poster.
Vineyards cover the slopes above the river, a reminder that this is the heart of Franconian wine country. The city also has a place in the history of science: Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered X-rays here in 1895.
