Manduria lies in the province of Taranto in Apulia, on the flat limestone land of the Salento. The old centre is a dense cluster of narrow, bending lanes, surrounded by newer streets laid out more regularly. Beyond them the countryside is divided into vineyards and olive groves, a close field pattern that covers much of the map.
The town is known for Primitivo di Manduria, the red wine made from the vineyards around it, and for the remains of its Messapian walls, large stone fortifications built by the pre-Roman people of the area. Nearby is the Fonte Pliniana, a spring in an underground cave mentioned by Pliny the Elder, and the municipality reaches down to the Ionian Sea.
