Mayenne sits in the north of the Pays de la Loire, in the department that shares its name, on both banks of the river Mayenne. On a map the river runs north to south through the heart of the town, crossed by bridges that link an old centre on the slopes above the water with neighbourhoods spreading out on the opposite side.
The town's best-known landmark is its castle, which overlooks the river and is considered one of the best-preserved Carolingian-era fortresses in France, with parts dating to around the tenth century. It now houses a museum. Mayenne is not the department's prefecture, a role held by Laval, but it remains the main centre for the north of the department.
